Strawberry Thief

Sara Clugage

Strawberry Thief is a caftan for crime. William Morris, the godfather of the English Arts & Crafts Movement, first printed his most popular design, Strawberry Thief, in 1883: it illustrates the thrushes who stole strawberries from his kitchen garden. This caftan retells the story from the thrushes’ point of view: nimble, intelligent, crafty, carefree, plucking a juicy red fruit only a wing-beat from safety. Garden walls won’t protect you from a strawberry thief.
